چکیده
Excited states of the nucleon are described as RPA configurations on a mean–field ground state taken from the MIT bag model. A residual interaction of a structure as in the Nambu–Jona–Lasinio model is used. The particle-hole states are coupled to good total angular momentum and isospin. Valence excitations of particle-hole type and quark–antiquark (qq) states from the Dirac–sea are included. The dependence of the baryon spectrum and multipole response functions on the coupling constant G is studied. At critical values of G the 3q– ground state becomes degenerate with strongly collective qq modes.

In this paper we develop a theoretical framework which allows us to study excitations of the nucleon. Assuming an effective two-body interaction as a model for low-energy QCD, we derive a relativistic TDHF equation for a many-body system of quarks. To render the Dirac-sea contribution to the mean field finite, we introduce a symmetry conserving regularization scheme. In the small amplitude limi...

We present fixed-t subtracted dispersion relations for Compton scattering off the nucleon at energies E γ ≤ 500 MeV, as a formalism to extract the nucleon polarizabilities with a minimum of model dependence. The subtracted dispersion integrals are mainly saturated by πN intermediate states in the s-channel γN → πN → γN and ππ intermediate states in the t-channel γγ → ππ → N ¯ N. For the subproc...

The status of Compton scattering by the nucleon at energies of the first and second resonance is summarized. In addition to a general test of dispersion theories and a precise determination of polarizabilities, the validities of four fundamental sum rules are explored. Recommended averages of experimental values for the electromagnetic polarizabilities and spin-polarizabilities of the nucleon a...
متن کاملGeneral Introduction to Compton Scattering
The polarizability of a system defines its response to a quasistatic electromagnetic field. The induced dipole moment of two constituents of opposite charge, q and −q respectively, at a distance ~r is ~ d = q~r = α~ E, with α the electric polarizability and ~ E the electric field. If the force between the constituents is governed by Hooke’s law, the equilibrium is obtained for α = 2q/C where C ...
